An institutional crisis can occur at any time and have major effects on an institution and the college community. Getting through a crisis in a 24/7 news cycle can be extremely difficult. Clear-eyed decisions must be made by those at the helm. Presidents cannot do it alone. The webinar will discuss principles, practical steps and outside perceptions on how boards can manage an institutional crisis.
What is appropriate board engagement on issues of educational quality? How can boards assure the education offered by their institution is of the highest possible quality, while respecting the prerogatives and responsibilities of faculty and academic administrators? Based on a recent AGB study, How Boards Oversee Educational Quality and Statement on Board Responsibility for the Oversight of Educational Quality, meeting panelists will lead a conversation on this fundamental, and increasingly important, area of board responsibility.
Held immediately prior to the National Conference on Trusteeship, the Workshop for Board Professionals is the premiere professional development conference for those who serve as the professional staff to governing and foundation boards. Coordinated by a representative program committee of peers, the workshop covers national education issues, best practices in governance, innovative uses of technology, practical tips, and shared knowledge and expertise through networking opportunities.
The 2012 National Conference on Trusteeship will look at the big ideas that are transforming higher education and the role governing boards, together with institutional leaders, play in that transformation. Plenary speakers include, among others, Clay Christensen, author of The Innovative University, and Richard Arum, author of Academically Adrift. The only national gathering designed specifically for higher education boards and institutional leaders, the conference focuses on governance-related issues and provides opportunities to learn best practices, hear how other boards are addressing challenges, interact with board members and leaders from across higher education, and hear from internationally recognized thought leaders.
