Eligibility and Dues
Eligibility for Membership
To be eligible, institutions must be accredited (or be candidates for accreditation) by a regional agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Membership also is open to other bodies:
- Advisory (nongoverning) and quasi-governing boards of institutions or campuses within public multicampus or statewide systems of higher education
- Boards of separately incorporated foundations affiliated with public colleges and universities
- Boards of statewide higher education coordinating and planning agencies
- Governing boards of independent K-12 schools
- Governing boards of universities incorporated in other nations as nonprofit or state-sponsored organizations
On a case-by-case basis, boards of certain national and international nonprofit organizations whose missions include substantial focus on higher education may be considered for membership.
Assessing Membership Dues
Dues are assessed according to an institution's FTE (full-time equivalent) enrollment, with some special exceptions.
Membership dues are payable in the anniversary month in which the member board first joined the association. Dues may be adjusted annually at the discretion of the AGB Board of Directors; adjustments take effect on January 1.
For governing boards of eligible four-year colleges and universities in the United States and its territories (including multicampus and state system boards of combined public four-year and two-year institutions), dues are assessed in ten categories on the basis of fall term FTE (full-time enrollment) equivalent figures. To include part-time students in the FTE total, AGB uses the definition as stated by the U.S. Department of Education: Three part-time undergraduate or graduate students equal one full-time student. Certain institutions may be eligible for a minimum dues rate.
