Ensuring Educational Quality: Governing Board Responsibilities

Based on two recent works by AGB, How Boards Oversee Educational Quality and AGB’s Statement on Board Responsibility for the Oversight of Educational Quality, meeting panelists will discuss the appropriate engagement of governing boards on issues of academic quality – an engagement that respects the prerogatives of faculty and academic administrators, but that helps also to assure stakeholders that the education offered by institutions is of the highest possible quality. Lunch and materials are included.

AGB is unable to issue refunds for attendees who cancel after this date. If you are unable to attend, a substitute is welcome in your place at no additional charge. 12:30 p.m. Board and Institutional Responses to Recent Developments in Educational Quality
Recent developments in academic and educational quality and the continued call for higher education to be accountable for student learning have put academic quality on the forefront of strategic issues. However, this issue, traditionally the prerogative of the faculty can be difficult to approach from a governance perspective. Yet, effective board engagement is imperative. Drawing on recent AGB resources, this opening session frames the issues and challenges.

12:50 p.m. Panel Discussion: Ensuring Educational Quality
Panelists and the moderator will engage in a wide ranging discussion about governing board support for and engagement in educational quality. Among the topics to be discussed, include academic relevance and quality, productivity and efficiency, student learning outcomes assessment, and effective relations with faculty and academic administrators.
