Institutionally Related Foundations: Supporting Public Colleges and Universities Through Real Property Development

Date:
February 29, 2012

Public colleges and universities are increasingly turning to their affiliated foundations to finance and develop dormitories, academic buildings, and other real property in support of research or commercial activities.  Such entrepreneurial ventures provide important strategic and financial benefits for the host institution, but can pose serious challenges for foundations.

This interactive workshop will address how foundations can support their institutions by acquiring and developing real property.  The session will cover the important issues foundation boards need to consider before undertaking real estate projects and best practices in oversight and management.  Roundtable luncheon discussions provide an opportunity to tap the experience of other foundation chief executives and board members involved in real estate work.

Topics include:

· Advantages of engaging foundations in real property development

· Financing models

· Legal issues

· Foundation staffing and volunteer leadership capacity

· Case study:  Eagle Village mixed use development including student housing, hotel, and retail

· Case study:  Virginia Tech Research Center

· Common challenges and pitfalls
