
College and University Foundation Boards: Roles, Responsibilities, and Effective Practice (Webinar)

This online orientation is designed to provide new foundation board members and staff as well as interested institution leaders with an overview of the roles affiliated foundations play in supporting public higher education, the specific responsibilities of foundation boards and board members, and hallmarks of effective foundations and foundation-institution partnerships.

Presenters:
Jerry Fischer, former president and CEO, University of Minnesota Foundation
Jerry Fischer retired in 2008 after 18 years as President and CEO of the University of Minnesota Foundation where he continues to serve as Senior Philanthropy Advisor. When Fischer joined the University of Minnesota Foundation in May 1990, private giving totalled $50 million for the fiscal year. In 2008, nearly 90,000 donors gave $289 million. In the same time period, the Foundation’s endowment went from $150 million to $1.4 billion, thanks to new gifts and wise investment policies. He has served on two national advisory panels of the Association of Governing Boards and is a Life Trustee and former Trustee Board Chair of the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan. Fischer received a BA degree in 1965 from the College of Wooster in Ohio and was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship to attend Yale University Divinity School the following year. He received an MBA from the University of Michigan in 1968.
David Bass, director of foundation programs and research, AGB
David joined AGB in 2007 as Director of Foundation Programs and Research. In this capacity he works directly with foundation boards and chief executives providing research and training on governance practice and other issues impacting the work and effectiveness of college and university foundations. David oversees AGB’s annual Foundation Leadership Forum which brings together board members and CEOs of over 300 institutionally related foundations for a 3-day program focused on governance practice, endowment management, and fundraising leadership, and an annual meeting for the legal counsel of university foundations.
