For Foundation Leaders

Effective governance entails far more than the fulfillment of fiduciary duties. The latter is an essential part of a foundation board’s responsibility, but truly strategic leadership requires boards to employ governance practices that ensure that they are fully engaged and maximizing the capacity of their organizations to fulfill their missions. Effective governance also requires boards to continually assess their own performance and adapt their practices to changing circumstances and evolving standards.

For almost ninety years AGB has served as an advocate for and authority on best practice in higher education governance. AGB membership equips boards with the information and resources they need to meet the highest standards of leadership.

Resources for the New Normal

College and university foundations are operating in a changed environment; institutions are facing a decade in which state support will be highly constrained, competition for philanthropic support intensified, and investment returns unpredictable. Affiliated foundations’ ability to raise and manage private resources, support entrepreneurial ventures, and forge relationships with business and community leaders can play an important role in helping institutions adapt and thrive in the new environment, but this will require foundation boards to assume a more engaged strategic role in partnership with institution boards and presidents.

AGB is the only national organization dedicated to enhancing the leadership capacity of higher education governing boards and is uniquely equipped to provide member foundations with access to best-practice resources, professional networks, and customized training and consulting to help them realize their full capacity and meaningfully advance their missions and the institutions they support.
