Committee on Trustees

This booklet is designed "to reinforce the thesis that the committee on trustees must perform with excellence if the board as a whole is to fulfill its responsibilities with distinction. The author outlines a typical committee mission, structure, responsibilities, and policies and practices. Ten committee responsibilities are described, such as:

  • designing the board composition and statement of criteria;
  • cultivating a network of trustee candidates;
  • managing orientation programs, and keeping former trustees involved;
  • motivating trustees and assessing their performance;
  • analyzing future board talent needs; and
  • ensuring the bylaws accurately reflect current policies and practice of the board.

Illustrative bylaw language for the committee on trustees is included.
