Charles A. Shorter is a senior advisor with extensive experience in higher education at the board, teaching, and consulting levels. He served for 12 years as a trustee at the City University of New York (CUNY), where he had board policy responsibilities for 21 colleges and campuses. He was a member of the Facilities and Planning Committee, as well as the Committee on Academic Policy Programs and Research. He participated in 15 presidential search committees—chairing six of them—and assisted with presidential assessments. He was a member of the search committees for two university chancellors. He also assisted in the planning and oversight of the Five-Year Vision Plan and provided board input to Middle States Accreditation reviews at six of the CUNY colleges.
Shorter was also an AGB board member for eight years. He served as co-chair of the Audit Committee, participated in AGB’s review of critical issues facing higher education, and developed related actions and communications. He also assisted in AGB workshops, the selection of new board members, and the development of new programs. He provided input on AGB leadership programs and workshops.
Based on Shorter’s professional position as an executive director at Ernst & Young’s Real Estate Advisory Group and Public-Private Partnerships, Columbia University engaged him to assist in the formal development of a Master of Science in Real Estate Development (MSRED) Program at the university. In addition to teaching a required course in the program for 20 years, Shorter had a role in fostering faculty development, formulating the admission process, and integrating the program with related university units. Shorter served as board chair for the Studio Museum in Harlem and was a founding board member of the New 42nd Street Corporation.

Shorter holds a BA from Princeton University and an MA from Columbia University. He is a class officer at Princeton and is frequently asked to provide commentary and input on critical issues confronting leadership at the university.
