As General Douglas MacArthur once said, “Old soldiers…just fade away.” Following my 24 years as the president of two colleges, I embraced MacArthur’s comment with the view that, unless a successor reaches out to them, former college presidents should also fade away. Doing so was particularly important in my case: After I left my second presidency, I chose to buy a home that was one house removed from the college.
