If you’ve watched the HBO series Succession or the film Conclave, you know that leadership transitions can be fraught with drama, politics, and behind-the scenes machinations. University and university-foundation leadership transitions, especially those that are unplanned, can suffer the same fate. That’s why, in addition to the usual strategic planning, investment management, and other responsibilities of foundation boards and leaders, it’s essential to include succession planning for board, staff, and university leadership.
