A few months after the artificial intelligence (AI) task force at the College of DuPage convened for the first time, one of the cabinet members asked a question I have not forgotten: “When do we finish?” It was a reasonable question. Boards are accustomed to commissioning work, reviewing findings, adopting policy, and moving on. But the work of addressing generative AI requires continuous attention; there is no finish line because the technology does not hold still long enough to be governed that way.
