Most university administrators and trustees have recently been encouraged (by campus speech groups like FIRE and Heterodox Academy), pressured (by extortionate federal funding conditions), or forced (by some state legislatures) to get their institution to stop speaking out on political or social controversies. “Institutional neutrality” is sweeping the country, and Heterodox claims that over 160 schools have signed on in just the last two years.
