Assessing and Developing College and University Presidents
By Terrence McTaggart
In an era during which being a campus or system leader has become more challenging, the environment more complex, the expectations greater, and the average leadership tenure in office shorter, Terry MacTaggart offers a new practical guide to board assessment of presidents that takes these factors into account while emphasizing the importance of developing the talent and skills of the incumbent leader. The relationship between board chairs, board members, and presidents is a leadership compact. Boards must engage presidents in designing these assessments of their work and their leadership development programs to create the kind of constructive feedback that improves that relationship and lifts the performance of senior leaders and their teams.
The New Realities for Public Higher Education Foundations
Edited by Richard D. Legon
This volume, a follow-up to AGB’s Margin of Excellence (2005) with new insights from leading foundation experts, is focused on the opportunities and risks foundations face in a dynamic and uncertain higher education environment. Two central themes are explored: 1) understanding the environmental conditions in which public institutions are meeting their mission—and how foundations must be aligned with their institutions to be essential partners, and 2) sharing specifics about how the work of foundations can safeguard the higher education value proposition through innovation, sound funding models and endowment practices, and risk management.
