Early in my career, years before I became a college president, I was a government attorney in a relatively high-profile regional office. One day, I decided to be ambitious and ask the office chief executive whether he would find having a press secretary beneficial, as his predecessors had. After a day of thinking about it, the boss agreed. And there I was in my early 20s with an additional duty: the office press spokesperson. I was proud and enthusiastic.
