Marc B. Parlange became the 12th president of the University of Rhode Island (URI) in August 2021. In his career spanning more than 30 years, he has held academic leadership, research, and faculty positions at Monash University, Australia’s largest university; the University of British Columbia; the prestigious Swiss public research institute École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne; and at Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, Davis. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

URI is Rhode Island’s public flagship research institution, with four campuses, nearly 18,000 students, more than 135,000 alumni, and an annual budget of more than $800 million. URI received its largest gift ever—$65 million—in November 2024.

What is the significance of the recent gift to URI?

The historic $65 million gift we received to establish the Schilling Scholars Program will undoubtedly have a profound impact on our mission to provide access to education. As a public, land-grant university, it amplifies our goal to serve the public while fostering innovation and economic growth. URI is supported by the state and this transformative gift goes beyond complementing public investment—it drives impactful change that state funding alone may not achieve.

Like many public universities, the heart of our mission is the success of our students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. This gift will open doors for many students through significant financial aid, enhanced academic support, and resources that support their success. Eliminating financial barriers to an education is a profound way to enable students to focus on their academic pursuits and meaningfully contribute to their communities after graduation.

What is the goal of the Schilling Scholars Program, and how will it enhance opportunities for high-achieving STEM students?

The goal of the Schilling Scholars Program is to provide transformative opportunities for high-achieving STEM students, empowering them to excel academically and become leaders in their fields.

By offering comprehensive, merit-based scholarships, the Schilling Scholars Program will make STEM education more accessible to exceptional students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to making a positive impact while at URI and after graduating.

In addition to financial support, the Schilling Scholars Program will provide access to experiential learning opportunities, state-of-the-art facilities, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Undergraduate research is paramount to any successful research institution, and this program will give students access to opportunities to engage in important work with leading scientists on our campuses.

This investment will position us as a national leader in STEM education, attracting top-tier talent, and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Why is philanthropy essential for advancing the mission of higher education and helping students achieve their goals?

I firmly believe that at the heart of philanthropy and alumni engagement is connection. Fostering meaningful connections, showcasing the impact those connections have, and creating opportunities for collaboration and connection with one another is critical. Connecting on a personal level is the approach I have taken as president. I have witnessed deep URI pride, particularly among alumni who want to be engaged in the life of the university in ways that go beyond giving. These alumni are critical URI ambassadors and storytellers, which is just as impactful as financial generosity. Building these connections helps us better discover what donors seek to support and what initiatives resonate with their personal experiences and values.

Connecting alumni with current students, and creating programs like the Schilling, Ryan, and Verrecchia scholars’ programs highlight donors’ direct impact on student success. Hosting events that celebrate alumni achievement and inviting them to participate in shaping programs that they support fosters a sense of ownership and partnership. Transparent communication about how their philanthropy makes a difference—through scholarships, innovative programs, or facilities—helps alumni donors see the outcomes of their generosity.

Philanthropy is critical for URI and other public universities because it enables us to go beyond the bounds of public funding. It empowers us to expand access, innovate, and directly support the endeavors and success of our students and faculty. For many students, donor-supported scholarships and programs create pathways that make higher education attainable.
