“Stay out of the weeds” is a common caution to trustees. It is a warning that the work of the board resides at a higher level than the weeds of management. Too many boards find themselves in those weeds, which is understandable given the nature and volume of challenges that institutions face. How does a board in the throes of those challenges get a better perspective?
