Former U.S. Representative Pat Williams—
A Tireless Advocate for Higher Education and Public Service

The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) joins the higher education community and the people of Montana in mourning the passing of former U.S. Representative Pat Williams, who died on June 25, 2025, at the age of 87.

Throughout his distinguished career, Williams exemplified the values of public service, civic responsibility, and unwavering support for higher education. Representing Montana in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 1997, he was widely recognized as a steadfast champion for students, faculty, and institutions of higher learning across the nation.

As a senior member of the House Committee on Education and Labor, Williams played a critical role in shaping federal policy to expand access to quality education and support academic freedom. His dedication to the principle that higher education is a cornerstone of an informed democracy and thriving society was evident throughout his legislative work.

After retiring from Congress, Williams continued to serve the public good through his leadership as a regent for the Montana University System. His tenure on the board reflected his deep belief in the transformative power of education, and his efforts helped strengthen higher education governance in his home state.

Williams’s legacy extends far beyond his titles and years of service. He leaves behind a record of advocacy that has benefitted countless students and educators, and a reputation for integrity, humility, and commitment to the common good. His contributions have left an indelible mark on Montana, the nation, and the higher education community.

Williams’s tireless advocacy highlighted his belief that education is not just preparation for life, it is the foundation of a just and thriving society. His leadership and passion for education will be deeply missed.

AGB extends its heartfelt condolences to Williams’s wife, Carol; their family; and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Tributes and gifts.
