New Guardians Podcast Episode and Video
The AGB Guardians Intiative released a new podcast episode last month on civil education. The participants are Jonathan Alger, president of James Madison University, and Kristen Hodge-Clark, former AGB vice president for best practice and innovation and a trustee at the College of Saint Benedict. They discuss the AGB publication, Reclaiming Higher Education’s Leadership in Support of Civil Education, highlighting good examples of civil education from their own institutions. During this discussion, they argue that preparing students for democracy is an imperative for many schools and boards can lead the way, even by ensuring that their own discussions are model examples for how students should act. As part of the Guardians Initiative, AGB also produced a video showcasing how the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce is partnering with regional presidents to highlight and articulate the value that higher education has to the metropolitan area as an economic driving force. In the video, three individuals describe the project: Julie Wollman, president of Widener University and chair of Regional College and University Presidents’ Alliance; Paul Beideman, president and CEO at Avenue of the Arts, Inc. and Widener University Vice Chair; and Rob Wonderling, president of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Ursinus College Board of Trustees. Schwartz Moderates SHEEO Panel on Reimagining Public Higher Education
Merrill Schwartz, AGB’s senior vice president of content strategy and development, moderated a panel at the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) Annual Meeting held in Little Rock, Arkansas, from July 15–19, 2019. This meeting includes university governing systems and heads of all state higher education coordinating agencies, many of which are AGB members.
Schwartz moderated the panel “Lessons Learned from Reimagining Public Higher Education.” This panel, which included Matt Freeman, Mark Hagerott, and Devinder Malhotra, discussed what “reimagining public higher education” looks like by using examples from various states that have already began this discussion. Participants were able to get a better understanding of the various reasons to begin these discussions and how the institutions and stakeholders can help make sure these discussions lead to successful results.
AGB’s Letter to Secretary DeVos About the Proposed Accreditation Regulations
AGB submitted a letter responding to the U.S. Department of Education’s request for comments on its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking related to accreditation. In the letter, AGB expressed sup-port for the Department’s attempts to remove prescriptive regulations, clarify confusing language, and provide flexibility to accreditors and institutions. However, AGB also conveyed cautions about the unintended consequences of these policies and regulations, including loosened requirements for new accreditors and institutional quality. October AGB Consulting Workshop in Boston
AGB Consulting will host a one-day workshop and “campfire” style dialogue for members in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 3, 2019, at the Airport Hilton. Topics covered by our staff and consultants will include trend alignment and future visioning, risk/crisis/change management, affiliations/mergers, and board assessment.

New Staff at AGB
Doug Goldenberg-Hart has worked in print and digital publications for over 24 years, with a broad range of experience in marketing, editing, and content strategy. Since moving to the Washington, D.C. area in 2003, Doug has specialized in higher education professional and academic library publishing. His books, e-books, and digital reference products have received numerous awards from industry groups and trade publications. Doug is the director of AGB Publications.
Elaina Loveland has worked in association publishing for 20 years. Most of her career has been focused on higher education: she is the former editor-in-chief of International Educator, published by NAFSA: Association of International Educators and former editor of The Journal of College Admission, published by the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Elaina has also taught English for several colleges and universities and is the author of Creative Colleges: Finding the Best Programs for Aspiring Actors, Artists, Designers, Dancers, Musicians, Writers, and More (now in its 5th edition). Elaina is the editor-in-chief of Trusteeship magazine.
