Across higher education, one message is becoming increasingly clear: Enabling innovation is no longer optional; it is essential to institutional sustainability and long-term success.
For institutionally related foundations, this moment presents both a challenge and a unique opportunity. As partners in advancing the mission, foundations are increasingly positioned to catalyze innovation—supporting new ideas, accelerating strategic priorities, and helping institutions respond to a rapidly changing environment.
From Support to Strategic Catalyst
Foundations have long played a critical role in securing and stewarding philanthropic support. Today, that role is expanding.
The most effective foundations are moving beyond traditional models of support to become strategic partners in innovation—working alongside institutional leadership to fund, test, and scale new approaches in areas such as student success, academic programming, research, and community engagement.
In this evolving landscape, foundation boards can:
- Align philanthropy with innovation priorities.
Ensure fundraising strategies are directly connected to the institution’s most urgent and forward-looking needs. - Accelerate strategic initiatives.
Provide flexible funding that enables institutions to pilot new ideas, respond quickly to emerging opportunities, and scale what works. - Foster relationships with entrepreneurs and other innovators.
Foundations often have relationships with a broad range of business and philanthropic leaders who can be valuable thought partners to help the institution identify opportunities to diversify revenue, enhance competitiveness, and position the institution for future success.
Strengthening the Foundation–Institution Partnership
As the role of foundations evolves, so too must the relationship between foundation boards and institutional leadership.
High-performing foundation boards are working with their institutions to:
- Clarify roles and expectations—Establishing a shared understanding of how the foundation supports innovation—when to lead, when to partner, and how to ensure close alignment with the institution.
- Align on strategic priorities—Working closely with presidents, campus leaders, and prospective donors and other partners to identify a focused set of initiatives where philanthropic investment can have the greatest impact.
- Embrace appropriate risk—Recognizing that innovation often requires early-stage investment and a tolerance for uncertainty, particularly when piloting new programs or models.
- Measure impact, not just inputs—Moving beyond fundraising totals to evaluate how philanthropic investments are advancing institutional goals and outcomes.
Innovation Requires Intention
Innovation does not happen by accident. It requires intentional leadership, and foundations are essential to making that possible.
As you reflect on your foundation’s role, consider:
- Are we aligning our philanthropic strategy with the institution’s most critical innovation priorities?
- Are we providing the flexibility needed to support experimentation and new ideas?
- Are we working in true partnership with institutional leaders and prospective donors to drive long-term impact?
These questions are central to how foundations can most effectively advance mission in today’s environment.
