Foundation CEO Assessment and Support

Governing boards are typically responsible for oversight and assessment of their chief executives’ performance, but goal setting and assessment can pose unique challenges for both foundation boards and CEOs. Foundation CEOs often have a dual reporting relationship, and their goals and priorities are typically informed by both institution priorities and foundation board expectations. This session will provide an overview of fundamental principles for board assessment of the CEO, developing an assessment model adapted to your structure, setting goals collaboratively, and positioning the CEO for success.

Transforming Stewardship to Deepen Critical Donor Relationships

Foundation board members and staff leaders play a crucial role in shaping the future of your institution. As the philanthropic landscape evolves with fewer donors making larger contributions, university foundations must adapt their stewardship practices to successfully navigate this new reality. This session will explore innovative strategies to:

  1. Optimize your foundation’s stewardship operations to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
  2. Create personalized donor experiences that showcase the impact of their contributions and reinforce their connection to your institution.
  3. Leverage the power of storytelling to communicate the transformative impact of donor support.
  4. Engage board members in foundation stewardship efforts.

Creating and Sustaining a Relationship Focused Foundation

Artificial Intelligence, Zoom, social media, advanced analytics, and instant messaging are all tools that can streamline work for advancement professionals. They can even make fundraising appear as straight forward as following instructions for assembling a birdhouse. At the same time accelerated turnover among institution and foundation leaders and remote work are making it harder to maintain close collegial partnerships. Without forgoing the benefits of new technologies and tools, how can foundation leaders create and sustain the relationships so critical to the work of boards and foundations. This session will focus on the competencies and practices that keep the art and soul alive in our work and organizations by asking: How do we build lasting relationships with key publics? How can we work through complex scenarios and get to the heart of matching the prospect’s goals with our organization’s needs? How do we help our staffs grow as trusted advisors rather than impersonal transaction machines?   How do we foster a vibrant board culture and healthy collaboration with institution leaders and advancement partners?

Leveraging the Foundation Beyond Fundraising

For institutions facing enrollment declines, identifying alternative revenue sources will be more important than ever. Foundations can play a valuable role above and beyond their work raising philanthropic support. This session explores the ways foundations can help to monetize real estate, research capital, and other campus assets in conjunction with corporate and philanthropic partners.

While foundation board members often have a wealth of investment expertise, they may lack experience as fiduciaries of a college or university endowment. This workshop, intended for board and staff leaders, will provide an overview of the governance principles applicable to the management of institutional endowments and highlight best practices for high-performing foundation investment committees.

Topics will include:

  • How higher education endowments differ from other types of investments and the fiduciary and other standards applicable to the staff and board members responsible for endowment oversight
  • Different management structures (committee and consultants, in-house investment office, outsourced CIO)

Prospective foundation executives will gain an understanding of the role foundation leadership team members play in supporting, engaging, and leveraging the board. Participants will learn from industry experts about the qualities boards and institutional leaders seek in candidates for CEO and other cabinet-level staff, questions they should ask about prospective foundation leadership opportunities, and practices for successfully navigating search processes.

Fueling Positive Change and Democratic Ideals

The 2025 Forum opens with a conversation between Michael Powell and Matthew Lambert reflecting on higher education as an exemplar of democratic values and as an agent for positive and inclusive change, creating better futures for students and the nation. Powell will share insights on governance and leadership from his experience as rector of the Board of Visitors of William & Mary, chair of the William & Mary Foundation, and as chair of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees. Powell will also draw on his experience as president of NCTA – The Internet & Television Association, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, chief of staff of the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice and a policy adviser to the secretary of defense.

Engaging the Board in Advocacy

Foundation boards can be among the most persuasive advocates on behalf of their institutions, representing community and business leaders who are often among the institutions’ most generous philanthropic investors. Leaders of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation and the CSUSB Philanthropic Foundation will share the ways in which their boards are engaged in community, state, and federal advocacy; approaches to conducting and supporting that work through standing board committees; and examples illustrating the ways that foundation board advocacy have benefited their partner institutions.

Finding Purple in a Field of Beige: Telling Your Unique Story

We live in a differentiation-obsessed society.  The only remaining way to differentiate is through authenticity. With so many campaigns and efforts underway to raise funds for higher education, how do you break out of the mold to find something that’s compelling and bold for your foundation’s story? Leverage this session to assess the quality of your differentiators, consider what might help you best tell your compelling narrative, and plan to elevate conversations and experiences with donors and constituents.

Is Your Endowment Ready for the Next Crisis?

Most institutional investors have a strategic policy portfolio, and they often say they take a long-term approach and will stick to their policy. But to paraphrase former boxer Mike Tyson, everyone has a plan until they get hit. It is never pleasant to think about negative scenarios, but it is certainly easier when times are relatively calm than when a crisis is unfolding. Asking a question as simple as “What are we going to do if our portfolio drops 20 percent?” can help set expectations that can guide you through challenging conditions when they arise. But it’s important to recognize that there are many layers to explore when creating a comprehensive “crisis playbook”—not the least of which is considering all the various types of crises to consider. Many investment committees spend time on the quantitative aspects of scenario analyses and stress testing. But it is also important to ask, “What are the likely behavioral reactions of your investment committee?” In this session, our experts will share examples and recommendations to help you create a framework for your crisis playbook.

Not the Game Day You Remember: Navigating the Changing Landscape of Collegiate Athletics

This session will explore the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, including the evolution of name, image, and likeness (NIL) compensation, the rise of the transfer portal, litigation impacting college athletics, and the potential for athlete revenue sharing and roster caps. Matt Banker, an attorney specializing in collegiate athletics, will provide an overview of emerging issues and facilitate a discussion with two foundation board leaders who have volunteer and professional experience in support of university athletic programs. The discussion will focus on how these changes might impact institutional priorities, athletic funding, athletic department operations, roles of foundations, and public perceptions of public higher education and college sports, with an eye toward understanding and adapting to these new realities.

Transformative Governance for Growth

Good governance entails far more than compliance with fiduciary standards, adherence to policy, and oversight of executive functions. Effective trusteeship can be transformative. This session illustrates how a strong board chair-CEO team worked together to move beyond entrenched practices that were impeding the foundation’s ability to support the institution. Over a period of about 5 years, they completed a merger with their alumni association, cut an over-sized board in half, diversified board composition, elevated board engagement, streamlined committees and meetings, developed the foundation’s first strategic plan, and positioned their foundation to grow fundraising.

Giving to public higher ed has been growing for decades, but we could be facing what some are calling a “donor cliff.” Millennials are on track to be the wealthiest generation in history, but younger generations account for a growing share of alumni and disproportionately small proportion of donors and dollars contributed to colleges and universities. Younger donors are also more diverse and may have different approaches to philanthropy than the previous generations that have driven the growth of campaigns and endowments. Creating a Team Culture That Feeds Your Strategy

We all know that culture can eat strategy for lunch, but how do you turn a feeding frenzy into feeding to fuel? Leaders of MSU Denver’s Advancement Division undertook a multiyear initiative, based on Brené Brown’s Dare to Lead curriculum, to transform their staff culture that was challenged by lack of accountability, staff turnover, and underperforming productivity. Starting with an assessment of staff and organizational culture, the Advancement Division went through a yearlong program followed by self-developed practices that have transformed its organizational culture and become a model for the rest of the university. These changes have resulted in a quadrupling of fundraising outcomes, staff feedback indicating they have grown professionally and personally, career advancement for many, and the attraction of top talent. This session will share their process and provide insights on fostering a healthy staff culture that will feed your strategy, not serve it for lunch.

Engaging Young Alumni as Advocates, Volunteers, and Future Donors

Legal Issues Roundtable

Foundation boards and leadership teams are responsible for helping their organization navigate a wide range of legal issues.  Perennial challenges include unusual gifts and donor requests, maintaining an appropriate arms-length relationship with the institution, managing risks, safeguarding donor privacy, and supporting real estate ventures. The U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action and state prohibitions and institutional policies relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion are forcing many foundations to examine and update gift agreements. Heighted scrutiny of higher education will likely lead to new efforts to impose open records and meetings requirements on foundations. Come prepared with questions for two seasoned foundation legal counsel in this interactive discussion.

Foundation Strategy and Planning

“Strategic planning” may conjure images of a months-long process resulting in a massive plan full of tactics and goals that may or may not serve as a valuable guide for the work of board and staff leaders. While foundations may not need a comprehensive “strategic plan,” they definitely need a strategic compass: a roadmap to provide guidance and focus to boards working to enhance their own governance practice, strengthen the performance of key foundation functions, and elevate the foundation’s ability to serve as a strategic mission partner to the institution. This workshop will present a streamlined approach to developing foundation strategy that is closely aligned with that of the institution and will share sample tools to help boards execute and monitor progress on plans.

Succession Planning for Foundations

Having succession plans in place can help ensure continuity and stability, mitigate risks stemming from unforeseen interruptions in leadership, and sustain relationships with institutional partners, donors, and other key constituents. Succession planning can, however, pose serious challenges for foundations that are staffed by university employees, have smaller staff counts and limited bench strength, and may not be engaged in the institution’s succession planning. This workshop will explore succession planning from the foundation perspectives, including:

  • Developing a “ready now and ready next” foundation CEO plan
  • Preparing for presidential transitions
  • Board leadership succession planning

Creating a Sustainable Foundation Business Model for a Dependent or Interdependent Foundation

Regardless of the structure of the foundation-institution partnership, all foundation boards have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure that the foundation has a sustainable business model. This entails looking beyond annual budgets to understand the long-term implications of the revenue source and endowment management, with an eye toward mitigating financial risks, prudently stewarding endowments, and growing the foundation’s ability to support its partner institution.

This workshop will provide an overview of the factors that foundation boards and staff should take into consideration in developing a sustainable business model, the process of developing or recalibrating a business model, and examples of modeling and scenario planning tools that can help to manage downside risk and enhance the return on investment in fundraising.

  • Factors informing foundation business models
  • Forward-looking financial planning
  • Funding sources
  • Revenue sources and the endowment as an engine of growth
  • Modeling and scenario planning

Cancellation Policy

This program is available only to registrants who are serving a higher education institution or foundation. Please contact registrar@AGB.org with any questions.

All cancellations and requests for refunds must be submitted in writing to cancellations@AGB.org and will be processed after the meeting. Requests for refunds must be received by close of business on January 7, 2025, to receive a full refund minus a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be issued for registrants who cancel after January 7, 2025. If you are unable to attend, a substitute is welcome in your place at no additional charge. AGB is not responsible for cancellations due to airline disruption, inclement weather, COVID-19, or schedule changes.

Group Discounts: If a cancellation causes the group to fall below the required three registrations, the refund will be issued minus the discount benefit received by the original group.
