Empowering boards to protect academic freedom and free speech.
Academic freedom and free speech are the foundation of American higher education, driving discovery, innovation, and democratic engagement. These principles enable the unfettered exchange of ideas, foster critical thinking, and prepare students for an increasingly complex world.
Governing boards have a fiduciary responsibility to safeguard open discourse and intellectual freedom at their institutions; however, they are under increasing pressure from external influences such as donors, alumni, supporters of athletic programs, politicians, and policy makers. Independent governing boards, when free from external influences, provide the structure, policies, and leadership necessary to protect these fundamental values.
It is essential that governing boards have the knowledge, tools, and strategies to maintain independence and ensure higher education serves their students, communities, and the nation. Only through strong, autonomous boards can higher education continue to be a place where inquiry flourishes and innovation thrives.
The Securing Higher Education’s Promise initiative was created to raise awareness and provide actionable tools that empower fiduciary boards in upholding autonomy and safeguarding academic freedom and free speech—ensuring the quality and integrity of American higher education.
