Independent governing boards, when free from external influences, provide the structure, policies, and leadership necessary to protect these fundamental values.

It is essential that governing boards have the knowledge, tools, and strategies to maintain independence and ensure higher education serves their students, communities, and the nation. Only through strong, autonomous boards can higher education continue to be a place where inquiry flourishes and innovation thrives.
