About:
In an era during which being a campus or system leader has become more challenging, the environment more complex, the expectations greater, and the average tenure in office shorter, Terry MacTaggart offers a new practical guide to board assessment of presidents that takes these factors into account while emphasizing the importance of developing the talent and skills of the incumbent. The relationship between board chairs, board members, and presidents is a leadership compact. Boards must engage presidents in designing these assessments and their leadership development programs to get the kind of feedback that improves that relationship and lifts the performance of senior leaders and their teams.
Assessing and Developing College and University Presidents updates recommended practices for continuous and annual assessments, comprehensive 360 assessments, and focused assessments, and shows how to integrate leadership development into each model. MacTaggart’s extensive experience as a consultant informs the major theme that contemporary presidents are running an academic enterprise, and therefore assessments in all forms must be tailored to the skills and behaviors needed to a successful enterprise leader.
