The Board’s Role in Free Expression on Campus

Debates regarding the value and definition of free expression are nothing new on college campuses but they have assumed a bigger role at the forefront of the many recent tensions and events we have witnessed this year. As noted by David Maxwell in a recent issue of this magazine, it is essential that governing boards affirm and ensure the centrality of free expression to the mission of their institution and work with administration, faculty, and staff to articulate and practice those values.1
